As part of British Science Week, Eyemouth HHS welcomed SAMS (Scottish Association of Marine Science) into their Science Enrichment group.
The workshop aimed to explore careers and pathways that might not have been previously considered by the students. The teachers also wanted to help the students understand the place that SAMS has within the science curriculum, and the breadth of careers within it. Locally we have the Berwickshire Marine Reserve3 and research centre.
The main curriculum theme was ocean currents, and the students engaged in various hands-on activities, including marbling to represent the currents, testing salt levels in water, using thermal cameras and creating their own globes.
The Science Enhancement session, at Eyemouth High School, was an excellent opportunity for SAMS to deliver a workshop on Ocean Currents . Pupils learnt how an accidental spillage of rubber ducks from a container in the Pacific Ocean, gave oceanographers information on how the ocean moves around the globe. They investigated the physical parameters of the thermohaline current (temperature and salt) through some fun and messy experiments with coloured water, infra-red cameras and refractometers. We then got creative with 3D origami globes, ocean current ink marbling and rainbow saline spectrums
