Parents & Carers
All too often we hear the phrase; “It wasn’t this hard when I was young.” when parents and caregivers are talking about supporting young people with what comes next after school.
What are we doing to support young people?
The good news is that there are so many opportunities for our young people today, with multiple options around what they could do next – there really is no wrong path. Our role is to provide you with the best information to share with your young person and provide direct support for them too. So, in addition to being here to talk you through options, we also:
- Organise work-based learning
- Promote apprenticeship and employment opportunities
- Deliver workshops to support young people with skills like writing an application, interview techniques
- Links to businesses - widening knowledge of opportunities and routes to access them
Marketplace has events for parents and carers, educators, careers advisers and other practitioners. You’ll find activities or resources from employers about their role, company or sector to help inspire young people
Hear from others:
“ I contacted our school DYW coordinator, Nicola Shaw regarding some support for my son. Nicola contacted a local business and arranged a 6 week block of construction work experience. This alongside school studies was great for my son, he could see how his learning in class could be used in the workplace. He really enjoyed his work experience and even extended this opportunity for a further 6 weeks. We are very grateful, Nicola has been approachable and very helpful throughout this process.”
“ As a parent of pupils at Jedburgh Grammar Campus, I am so grateful for the support DYW has shown my sons over the last couple of years. They have engaged in opportunities which may not have otherwise been available to them, such as work experience and recently a National business competition which my son took part in. Both of these experiences provided valuable insight and opportunitoies which have been extremely helpful to both boys.”
