Apprenticeship Week 2024

Online Regional Awareness for Parents and Carers

DYW Borders partners and local businesses came together to raise awareness of Scottish Apprenticeships.  The target audience was parents and carers.

68 parents/carers registered and 57 attended the session, from across the regions secondary schools.

We welcomed discussions from Waverly Housing, Social Care Foundation Apprentice, Borders College, Administration Modern Apprentice and Plexus, Electronic Engineer Graduate Apprentice to present their experience and apprenticeship journey so far.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships.  An opportunity to promote the benefits of work-based learning.  In partnership with Borders College, we utilised this national event to raise awareness and provide information around the apprenticeship family, showcasing real life experiences.

We invited parents and carers from all nine secondary schools to learn about Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships in the Scottish Borders.  We invited local pupils, past and present who have embarked on an apprenticeship journey.  This enabled parents to hear first hand experiences and to understand different types of apprenticeships available and the benefits they offer.

We ran the session on MS Teams to allow parents from schools across our region to attend, ensuring the information was available to everyone.  Whilst Skills Development Scotland deliver webinars nationally, DYW Borders and Borders College wanted to make this event bespoke to the region and involve local businesses and apprentices.  By doing so we could overcome some of the common misconceptions and barriers to this pathway.

The engagement from parents/carers during the Q&A was very positive.  Working collaboratively with partners to deliver the session improved the reach and shared the reach.  The apprentices and businesses gave accurate professional advice.  We were able to provide information on courses available in the area and answer questions on the evening.
